Is there really a difference between a school teacher and a home tutor? Well, on a general point of view, both of these roles appear similar enough. Both roles are filled by men and women who are experts in their respective fields and who are willing to share their know-how with the younger generation, and both tutors and teachers play an important part in directing students along the trail of knowledge.

But when taking a look at the two roles closely, one might come across a few differences that are worth noting.

Quantity of students or class size; It is in this subject where the most obvious difference between a tutor and a school teacher can be noticed. Teachers conduct lessons in a school or classroom location with a large group of students, while following a standardized manner of teaching.

On the other hand, tutors teach their students through small group discussions or one-on-one lessons, this allows a more individualized manner of teaching where all the student’s learning needs are provided with ample attention. Classes are usually conducted at the student’s home, but other settings are also utilized as long as they are appropriate and convenient to both the student and the tutor.

Method of instruction: School teachers educate their students by way of a standardized course syllabus set by the school or a governing body. The subjects are guided by a rigid curriculum and timetable, and students are then provided with marks or scores according to their performance in the said program.

As opposed to a rigid curriculum, Home tutors’ students are taught through highly flexible lesson plans which cater to whatever topic of learning the student is having trouble with. And since the classes are not governed by a rigid program and time frame, the learning mood has a more relaxed feel and the student can access all the time and guidance that he or she requires in order to fully understand a topic.

In summary, school teachers supply the general manner of instruction while tutors help students keep up with the rest of the group by filling in the gaps of knowledge that may surface along the way, thus, these two roles serve to flexible each other.
